Canada’s job market ends year on upbeat note

Canada’s labour market ended the year with strong private sector and full-time gains. Canada gained 22,000 jobs in December, as 38,000 full-time jobs were created and 16,000 part-time jobs disappeared, according to a report from the Conference Board of Canada. The unemployment rate remained unchanged at 7.6%. Private businesses created the majority of jobs, although the public sector did make a small gain. Self-employment, however, declined. Manufacturing added a surprising 65,700 jobs. Yet, despite this gain, employment in the industry remains unchanged from where it was 18 months ago. Elsewhere, construction lost 27,100 jobs. In general, the goods-producing sector gained 40,800 jobs, but the service sector lost 18,800 jobs in December. Strong gains were posted in the transportation and warehousing industries, but trade and health care suffered large losses. Ontario, Quebec, and Newfoundland and Labrador all saw gains in December. British Columbia’s labour market declined with a loss of some 22,500 jobs. B.C.’s unemployment rate rose from 6.9% to 7.6%.
