Ontario Labour Market Highlights
According to the results of Statistics Canada’s latest Labour Force Survey (LFS), employment in Ontario totaled 6.7 million persons in January, up 36,300 (0.5 %) from a revised December estimate. All numbers are seasonally adjusted. This is the third straight month of significant job gains following a period of declines from July through October last year.
Ontario’s unemployment rate of 8.1% was unchanged from December as the labour force grew by 0.6%. January’s employment growth included full- and part-time jobs, led by self-employed persons but also including payroll jobs in the private and public sectors.
By industry, agriculture led employment growth in January (up 13,900 persons or 17%) and information/recreation services (up 10,700 persons or 3.2%).
It is forecast that employment in Ontario will grow by 1.9% this year and 2.1% in 2012, following a gain of 1.8% last year. The province’s unemployment rate is forecast to average 8.3% in 2011 and 7.6% next year, down from 8.7% in 2010.
