In addition to his strong tax and assurance background, Michael’s portfolio includes acquisitions, playing a key role in numerous due diligence engagements for the firm’s clients.
Michael has honed his skills in crafting plans to meet client’s needs, recognizing that responsiveness and collaboration are integral to gaining confidence and achieving a sense of control in the face of pressing issues.
“When you have had the opportunity to develop systems within your own organization, you understand the importance of considering many factors when implementing a plan. Collaboration between an owner and a trusted financial advisor can often polish an idea that might not have otherwise seen the light of day,” says Michael. “I take pride in understanding my clients’ businesses so we can work together to identify key areas requiring focus.
A regular presenter at local high schools, Michael highlights the value and role of CPA Canada to students considering a career as a CPA. His community outreach contributions also include a four-year term as one of two inaugural citizen members of the City of Burlington Audit Committee.
“My involvement with the Audit Committee has given me a greater appreciation of the ‘behind the scenes’ work required to maintain our great community,” says Michael.

Not everyone associates taxes and accounting with volunteerism and community service. When I joined SB Partners as a co-op student, the firm encouraged my activities within the community. As my skills and knowledge developed, I was able to give more back to the community. The presentations that I make geared at helping seniors and people with disabilities to take full advantage of the benefits of various tax credits are important to me. Giving someone the additional knowledge of tax credit that they didn’t know that they were entitled to can be life changing, especially for those who need every dollar to make ends meet . It’s a great feeling to know that you are making a difference.
At SB Partners, I also organize the Next Gen CEO initiative, which is a free seminar series that educates young business people who will be taking on senior management or executive positions in either private or family-owned companies. The idea is to give them a sound foundation in business, financial, human resource and risk management.
I believe that life is all about experiencing different things. Learning never stops and you should always be willing to get out there and try something new. This philosophy has led me to do some really exciting things in my life, like co-hosting a radio show in university and taking up organized hockey for the first time in my late 20’s – as the goalie of course! For this same reason travel plays a huge role in my life – and it allows me to share this learning with my best friend, my wife.
